Annual Pi Day Fundraiser

Pi Day may be over but we prefer to celebrate pi all month! In the SWE-BWS community, we are strong supporters of this holiday, as it celebrates both our favorite irrational number and our favorite dessert.

This year, we will be holding our 4th annual Pi Day fundraiser throughout the month of March. In order to participate, all you have to do is:

  1. Go to your favorite local bakery, pie shop, or pizzeria (yes, pizza is pie)
  2. Make a purchase
  3. Send us a photo of your receipt at treasurer@swe-bws.org

SWE-BWS will match the price of your purchase and pledge the amount to World Central Kitchen, a foundation that distributes meals to individuals and communities in need. Our hope is that throughout March, we will not only raise money for this organization, but also support local businesses throughout the DC-Baltimore area. Let’s see if we can surpass the amount raised in 2023!

We hope you take this opportunity to enjoy some delicious food! Please email us at leadership@swe-bws.org if you have any questions.

The section is looking for 15 minute presentations in areas of interest to the aerospace community by young professionals (age 35 and under), graduate, undergraduate, high school students and educators. Topics can be technical in nature or focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).

Technical track: Presentations will be scored on various criteria including ability to convey impact of work, demonstrate knowledge of the field, methodologies, communication and more. Awards will be given to exceptional presentations in the various categories listed above.

DEI track: Presenters are encouraged to share their story and speak on topics including but not limited to improving DEI in Aerospace, dealing with imposter syndrome/burnout, authenticity, empowerment and outreach, intersectionality and more.

This is an excellent opportunity to share your work with the aerospace community and learn more about the innovative work of fellow aerospace enthusiasts! You do not need to be a member of the Mid-Atlantic Section to participate!

Opportunities

SWE-BWS has several opportunities listed below for you to lead and volunteer in a range of SWE outreach activities! If you have any questions, feel free to send an email to vicepresident@swe-bws.org.

  • Collegiate Outreach Liaison: Volunteers will work with collegiate SWE leads to partner in 1 virtual event of the collegiate section’s choosing. Volunteers will have the opportunity to help coach collegiate leads on leadership & event organization. Instructions & help will be available to volunteers. We partner with 7 SWE college sections around DC and MD. Please let us know your location or college preference in the registration form.
Volunteer as a College Outreach Liaison
  • Chair/Co-Chair for College Liaisions: We’re looking for a volunteer or two to serve as chair or co-chair for SWE-BWS college liaisons. SWE–BWS partners with 7 local SWE collegiate sections for an outreach event yearly. There will be SWE volunteer liaisons for each school, so we need a chair to help coordinate issues, calendars, and calls for volunteers via the BWS Ecomms.
Volunteer as Chair for College Liaisons
  • Chair for a MS/HS Outreach Event: We’re also looking for a Chair to run a Middle School or High School virtual SWE outreach event.  SWE-BWS will help provide ideas, volunteers, funds and support. This is a great opportunity to introduce girls to science and engineering!
