Joint Meeting with AWiT
Tuesday, February 18th, 4 p.m. – 7 p.m.

Join us on February 18, 2025 from 4pm-7pm in the Howard County Rooms (Back of building 1 cafeteria) for a joint meeting with APL Women in Technology (AWiT) and SWE-BWS. This meeting will be held in-person. Registration is required and registering past February 14th does not guarantee dinner will be available.

Our guest speaker, Dr. Jane Valentine, will discuss “High-Resolution Modeling of Wearables-Based Disease Surveillance”. Traditional public health (PH) surveillance relies on symptomatic patients and diagnostic testing, often delaying the detection of disease outbreaks and underestimating their magnitude. To address this, a wearable-based human sentinel network (HSN) has been developed to provide early warnings of public health emergencies. Tier 1 involves wearable physiological monitors for a subset of the population, generating alerts for possible infections. Alerts prompt confirmatory testing and reporting via a secure cloud platform that aggregates data for public health authorities. Modeling results show an HSN covering ~5% of the population can provide 5–14 days advanced warning for influenza outbreaks and ~1 day for anthrax attacks, significantly improving response times.

Sunday, March 2nd, 2 p.m.

Join us as we discuss our latest read! This month we will be reading “The Art Thief: A True Story of Love, Crime, and a Dangerous Obsession” by Michael Finkel. You can purchase a copy here!

A summary is provided below:

“Stéphane Bréitwieser is the most prolific art thief of all time.
He pulled off more than 200 heists, often in crowded museums in broad daylight.
His girlfriend served as his accomplice.
His collection was worth an estimated $2 billion.
He never sold a piece, displaying his stolen art in his attic bedroom.
He felt like a king.
Until everything came to a shocking end.”

“The Art Thief is a spellbinding portrait of obsession and flawed genius, giving us one of the most remarkable true-crime narratives of our times, a riveting story of art, theft, love, and an insatiable hunger to possess beauty at any cost.”

November Virtual Book Club

Sunday, November 10 at 2:00 p.m.

Join us for our November Virtual Book Club, where we will be discussing “Under a White Sky: The Nature of the Future” by Elizabeth Kolbert.

Registrants will receive an email with the Zoom link 2 hours prior to the event! Questions can be sent to leadership@swe-bws.org.

Below is a description of the book:
In Under a White Sky, Elizabeth Kolbert takes a hard look at the new world we are creating. Along the way, she meets biologists who are trying to preserve the world’s rarest fish, which lives in a single tiny pool in the middle of the Mojave; engineers who are turning carbon emissions to stone in Iceland; Australian researchers who are trying to develop a “super coral” that can survive on a hotter globe; and physicists who are contemplating shooting tiny diamonds into the stratosphere to cool the earth.

One way to look at human civilization, says Kolbert, is as a ten-thousand-year exercise in defying nature. In The Sixth Extinction, she explored the ways in which our capacity for destruction has reshaped the natural world. Now she examines how the very sorts of interventions that have imperiled our planet are increasingly seen as the only hope for its salvation. By turns inspiring, terrifying, and darkly comic, Under a White Sky is an utterly original examination of the challenges we face.

SWE-BWS and Accenture Federal Services Joint Meeting

Thursday, November 14 at 6:00 p.m.

Please join SWE-BWS’s Gold Corporate Sponsor for an information session on Next-Gen Mission Analytics (NMA)!

NMA is an open-source intelligence platform which delivers near real-time pattern and behavioral analysis of various data, allowing users to curate more than 100,000 global media sources through a common operating picture.
In NMA, analysts can now interact with a generative chat interface using natural language to automatically create complex search strings structured in NMA’s querying language.
These queries create custom, on-demand visualizations from a repository of millions of open-source documents. Additionally, analysts are now enabled to interact with data in their native language. The hours analysts spend researching, finding topics, translating, and structuring queries are now reduced to minutes.

Come in person to see a live demo of this tech! A virtual option is also available if you are unable to join at the Arlington location.

WE24 Recap
SWE BWS members had such a great time at WE24 in Chicago, IL! WE24 left us inspired by the great connections made and powerful stories shared. We want to thank the WE24 organizers, speakers, and fellow attendees for creating an event filled with learning, growth, and empowerment. We are excited to bring these experiences home with us and continue working towards positive change in STEM.

We are so proud of our very own Cassandra and Victoria, who led an empowering session titled  “Breaking Boundaries: The Myth of Disciplinary Lines in Engineering”.

Some Key Takeaways from their session:
Seek: Learn from those around you at every opportunity.
Explore: Step over boundaries to bring your expertise to new domains.
Connect: Collaborate to build collective knowledge and experience.
Generalists act as “force multipliers” on any team.

While in Chicago, SWE BWS members came together for a Happy Hour after Day 1 to connect and celebrate WE24. Attendees shared takeaways from the inspiring opening keynote and their favorite sessions from the first day, discussing the moments that resonated the most. Thank you to the 12 attendees!
We are excited to share that SWE BWS was selected to receive a SWE Mission Award in recognition for our FY24 efforts! SWE BWS was awarded the Silver Mission Award. This award recognizes SWE groups that embody SWE Core Values and demonstrate continuous improvement and growth as they work to achieve SWE Strategic Goals.

Thank you to the FY24 Leadership Team for all your hard work and dedication. We are looking forward to continue this effort during FY25!

Career Opportunities in International Relations Symposium

October 4th 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. ET

American Women for International Understanding (AWIU) is hosting its Eighth Annual Career Opportunities in International Relations (COIR) Symposium on Friday, October 4, 2024. The symposium will be held on the 5th Floor of MLK Library in Washington, D.C.

The theme of this year’s symposium, “Women in STEM: Forging Global Impact,” will be explored through presentations, panels, and discussion groups.

This day-long event will feature an array of speakers, panels, breakout discussions, a complimentary lunch, and ample networking opportunities with prominent women diplomats, career State Department professionals, international organization experts, and representatives from non-profits focused on pressing global issues such as cybersecurity, AI, public-private partnerships for space exploration, health equity, and more.

COIR events offer young women the chance to learn about careers in international affairs and engage directly with women leaders in the field. The year’s event will also encourage women interested in pursuing STEM careers, or STEM-adjacent careers, on the global stage.

AWIU, founded over 50 years ago, aims to promote woman-to-woman interaction and global understanding through meaningful delegation visits, small grants for community development, support for women students and young professionals, collaboration with the U.S. Department of State for the International Women of Courage Celebration, and the impactful work of local chapters acting locally and globally.

In her latest #1 New York Times bestseller, the author of the bestselling phenomenon Quiet reveals the power of a bittersweet, melancholic outlook on life, and why our culture has been so blind to its value.

If you’ve ever wondered why you like sad music …
If you find comfort or inspiration in a rainy day …
If you react intensely to music, art, nature, and beauty …

Then you probably identify with the bittersweet state of mind.”

Event Recap
We recently hosted a dynamic panel at UMBC, bringing together early-career women engineers from immigrant backgrounds to discuss their journeys and experiences. The turnout was fantastic and the engagement was even better! We delved into some critical issues that resonate with many in our field such as navigating discrimination, mentorship, and imposter syndrome. Let’s continue to support and uplift each other in our professional journeys.

Annual Pi Day Fundraiser

Pi Day may be over but we prefer to celebrate pi all month! In the SWE-BWS community, we are strong supporters of this holiday, as it celebrates both our favorite irrational number and our favorite dessert.

This year, we will be holding our 4th annual Pi Day fundraiser throughout the month of March. In order to participate, all you have to do is:

  1. Go to your favorite local bakery, pie shop, or pizzeria (yes, pizza is pie)

Our hope is that throughout March, we will not only raise money for this organization, but also support local businesses throughout the DC-Baltimore area. Let’s see if we can surpass the amount raised in 2023!

We hope you take this opportunity to enjoy some delicious food! Please email us at leadership@swe-bws.org if you have any questions.
